Letterkenny and Ballymoney U14’s play out hard fought draw

Letterkenny hosted a determined Ballymoney team hoping to avenge an away
victory by Letterkenny earlier in the season.
This was a very tight contest throughout between two well matched squads.
Both management teams emptied the subs bench during the game in looking
to seek out an advantage and blood some young players and try others in
different positions.
Opportunities were limited due to both teams rapidly closing down space and
putting in some ferocious tackles. Letterkenny took the lead late in the first
half when Ultan McGuiness found a hole in the heart of the Ballymoney
defence. He still had some work to do as he was chased all the way by 3
defenders but evaded all to touch down under the posts. Finn Duffy struck
over the conversion in absence of regular kicker Cian O’Hagan still out with a
hand injury.
Letterkenny enjoyed the better of possession and territory and mid way
through the second half had a try disallowed. The entire Letterkenny side
controlled the ball through a series of phases with Cillian Boyle finally barging
through but was stopped just short of the line. Finn Duffy picked up the ball in
support and put the ball down over the line but the referee adjudged a double
movement much to the delight of the away defence.
With only one score in it Letterkenny remained vulnerable and the away team
had more to celebrate right at the death. Ballymoney pushed Letterkenny back
into their half and then with some quick handling across the back row created
an overlap. Although the Letterkenny full back caught up with the ball carrier
on the 5 metre line the ball was recycled in-field for a Ballymoney player to
find a hole in the stretched Letterkenny defence to run around and touch
down directly behind the posts. Cue the elated Ballymoney celebrations! A
simple conversion followed and with the resulting restart drifting out of play
this game finished in a tie 7-7. Letterkenny will be disappointed not to take all
the points from this game but Ballymoney probably deserve something from
two very tight games between these sides this season.
