Ramelton born Dave Gallaher perished as a 43 year old soldier one hundred years ago from this week on 4th October 1917. His exploits as a rugby player, leader, innovator and captain of the 1905 Originals, set him apart as one of the most influential rugby players of all time. He died leading many other young NZ soldiers in the bloody battle of Broodenseinde while capturing the Gravenstafel Spur as part of the wider battle of Passchendaele. He lost two other brothers in the war and left behind a widow and young daughter.
Eden Park will open to the public on Weds October 4th to commemorate all the fallen in WW1and recognise the huge loss of life from New Zealand where over 100,000 people - 10 percent of the population, enlisted for the war effort in Europe.
