Letterkenny go close in local derby v Strabane

In a tight and competitive starting match in the Kukri Ulster Rugby Championship Div 3, local rivals Letterkenny and Strabane faced off in the Old Grammar School in Strabane.
During the game, Letterkenny showed much promise but also some naivety. A slow start from Letterkenny allowed a fired up Strabane 1st XV take the early initiative and race to a 10 - 0 lead after two soft scores due to a lack of intensity from 'kenny. The boys pulled together and started putting some good phases together with David Brown characteristically to the fore. This saw Letterkenny register two well taken scores by Brown and then flying winger Daragh McConnell. Strabane responded with scores of their own and battle see-sawed as the teams competed and Letterkenny's scrum dominance started to take effect. A penalty try to Letterkenny put Letterkenny in scoring distance but unfortunately despite brave efforts, Strabane held on for a valuable 29-22 victory. Letterkenny will feel a little unfortunate as two tries from Tony McBride and David Ward were disallowed that could have made the difference. This match was an exciting and well contested match which should give much hope to the Letterkenny Squad that with a few improvements, they can make a serious challenge during the full season.
New coach Kevin Arenhold takes over this week and will look to build on the hard work and expertise of Gordon Curley and Collie Farrell through the preseason.
There is no question this young squad is capable of huge improvements and will certainly look to build on this performance.
