Letterkenny took to the field today on a damp and overcast morning with a stern look in their eyes and fire in their bellies, they looked ready to conquer the world. After the first whistle Rainey kicked the ball deep into the 22 and the match was off.
Both teams started strong with the ball flowing out the back line and ground made by both, until the ball popped out of a maul and Ben Hopkins put boot to ball along the ground and chased his kick down the wing only for the ball to hop out over the side line just shy of the try line.
Letterkenny continued to put on the pressure until 9 mins in when Orrin burst through the line after peeling from the back of the maul to score his first in the corner.
The score stood at 5-0 after 10 mins.
Further strong play from both teams saw Rainey gain the upper hand and charge down the right hand side where they spilled the ball and the scrum was awarded to letterkenny. Rainey somehow managed to spoil the scrum and took full advantage by charging over the line just to the right of the posts and slotted the conversion.
5-7 the score after 15 mins.
The match continued to be dogged and both sides battling hard to gain the advantage which came with 1 min left on the clock when again up stepped Orrin crossing the line in the right hand corner.
The half time score 12 - 7 to Letterkenny.
After some words of encouragement from the coaches at HT Letterkenny stepped up their game and cometh the hour cometh the man, Orrin crashes over for his hat trick this time to the left of the posts, Orrin then took the conversion only to see it hit the upright and fall off to the left.
5 mins later Kaymin Shortt chased down a boot to ball by Orrin which bounces just short of the line, the pack are quick to get there and Ben Hopkins plucks the ball from the ruck and dives for the right hand post to score his first of the year which was converted by Orrin.
10 mins into the second half the first substitutes or the day are made with Tirnan and Ewan Douglas making way for Brian and Finn Nicolas.
Minutes later Rainey are awarded a penalty outside the 22 and they attempt the kick which drifts wide allowing letterkenny to gather the ball and charge up the field, with the wind in their sails Letterkenny edge ever closer to the 22 and the ball is whipped back to Orrin at outhalf and he again goes on one of his runs and breaks through the line to score under the posts, converting his own try.
31-7 with 14 mins to go.
With 12 mins left on the clock a triple substitution is made, Isaac, Eoin Harris & David make way for Conor, Calum & Daithi.
With 10 mins left on the clock Orrin manages to cross the line for his fifth of the day and the final score on the day remained at 38 - 7.
A very strong and courageous game was played by one and all on the day and too many strong performances to mention, well done lads and keep up the great work.
