Letterkenny won the toss today and opt to play into the wind in the first half, playing from left to right.
From the off Limavady show they are not here to just make up the numbers and win possession of their own kick off and heap the pressure on Letterkenny. They win an early penalty for a high tackle and decide to run at Letterkenny, Jynaid soon puts in his first crunching tackle of the day and puts an end to the early onslaught, however Limavady keep up the pressure and win another penalty on the 22, this time Kaymin and Eoin Parkinson bring down the big number 8 with a double tackle to stop him from charging over the line, next Jack Speer increases Letterkennys tackle count with another big hit and through some excellent defensive work they keep Limavady out.
Through some nice interplay in the forwards with breaks from Dan and Mathew Letterkenny manage to get back to the halfway line. Letterkenny are awarded a penalty on the 22 due to Limavady drifting off side, which they quickly tap and go and this time they are stopped short on the 5 meter line and they knock on. Limavady manage to force their way back to the half way line, this time up steps Kaymin and Jack speer who again put in a huge double tackle and drive the Limavady player back 3 meters where he knocks on the ball. Again Limavady turn over the ball and get it out wide where they looked to have the overlap but a huge tackle from Teirnan soon puts a spanner in the works. Letterkenny again mount another attack and are awarded a penalty on the 22 which Kaymin opts to have a shot at goal, the kick drifts to the right and wide but only to be knocked on by a Limavady hand and Letterkenny now have a 5 meter scrum, which they win and through quick hands from the scrumhalf and outhalf they get the ball out to the wing, but no way through so they hold possession in the ruck and Ben again feeds Kaymin and he goes on a solo run to his left and scores his first of the day to the left of the posts with 16 mins on the clock. 5 – 0 the score.
Limavady are not put off by the score and from the kick of win the ball again and put Letterkenny under huge pressure inside their 22, they continue to run the ball out wide and get within 5 meters and from the back of a maul one of their players gathers the ball and barges over under the posts. Conversion is good 5 – 7 and for the first time this year Letterkenny find themselves behind after 19 mins.
With 10 mins left in the first half Letterkenny make their first change with Conor Smyth coming on for Finn Boyce. Letterkenny again find themselves in striking distance of the line and are awarded a penalty 5 meters out, quick tap and go and from the back of the ruck Jack Speer picks up the ball and dives over the line in the right hand corner. With a successful conversion from Ben Hopkins the score after 24 mins is 12 – 7.
From the kick off David Henry catches the ball and with some dancing feet and a super run gains 10 meters of ground. Limavady mange to turned it over again and are on the attach this time Conor Smyth puts in a crunching tackle and stops them in their tracks.
With some surging runs from Jynaid, Conor Mangan and quick hands out the back line Letterkenny find themselves over in the corner with the try scorer Ewan Douglas. 17 – 7 last min of the first half.
Letterkenny kick off the second half with both teams hungry for the win, Letterkenny gain the advantage with a penalty and find themselves on the Limavady 22.
9 mins in and another change is made, Conor Mangan and David Henry are replaced with Eoin Harris and Finn Nicolas.
Letterkenny throw in to the lineout on the 22 and the ball is knocked back onto the ground on the Letterkenny side and with a flick of the outside of the boot Ben manages to flick the ball into Kaymin’s hands who sets off for the line and beats several defenders to score in the corner. 10 mins gone in the second half, 22 – 7.
Letterkenny now starting to dominate a lot of the play with some great scrummaging and rucks from their pack and also some fine running from the backs, they manage to cross the line again a few mins later with Tieran scoring in the corner. 27 – 7 after 15 mins of play.
With 12 mins left on the clock 2 more subs are made with Daithi Doherty coming on for Isaac and Calum Orsi in for Ewan Douglas.
Mins later the final substitutions are made with Dan making way for Jayden Friel and Tiernan McFadden making way for Finn McMonagle.
Limavady fail to give up and keep attacking down the wings and are awarded a penalty for their troubles, with a quick tap the big number 8 is surging towards the line but Eoin Parkinson is having none of it and brings down the big man with a thump. Limavady continue to try and punch holes and are awarded a penalty 5 meters from the line which they deservedly convert by crossing the line in the corner. 2 mins left 27 – 12.
Letterkenny hold strong for the remaining mins and win their 6th in a row with another excellent performance against a dogged team that did not give up the fight to the very end.
