The lads travelled to Limavady on a lovely calm, cool and dry morning to play an away match at the John Hunter Memorial grounds in Limavady.
Letterkenny get the match underway with Orrin kicking off, Limivady catch and setup the maul and feed their out half, Jynaid makes a dash for the out half and blocks down his clearance kick which he gathers from the ground and finds clear ground between himself and the posts and he sprints over to score the first of the day under the posts after 30 seconds of play. Orrin steps up and slots the conversion between the uprights and the score in the first minute is [0 – 7] to the visitors.
Letterkenny have started the stronger of both sides and continue to dominate the opening mins with some great running by the backs and follow up play from the forwards and they put multiple phases together early in the game, making some good ground, after 15 phases they find themselves a mere 5 meters from the try line. But this time Limavady hold their line and fight of the initial attack and earn a penalty for their troubles back on the 22.
The out half goes for the touch line but finds his kick is short and Ewan Douglas gathers and launches another attack, he in turn feeds inside to Ben Hopkins who runs the ball out the quickly reformed back line and into the eager hands of Tiernan McFadden on the left wing and he crashes over for the second try of the game after 6 mins of play. [0-12] the score after a difficult kick from the side line by Orrin, falls short of the target.
Limavady get play underway again and win the ball back and they begin to gain some momentum of their own and through several phases find themselves in the Letterkenny 22, Letterkenny remain vigilant in defence and with some big tackles from Eoin Parkinson and Tiernan McFadden manage to halt the surge for the line. Limivady are rewarded with a penalty from the pressure they are putting on the dogged Letterkenny defence and they decide to tap and go feeding their big charging number 8 who beats a few tacklers but Eoin is having none of it and chops the big lad down 5 meters out.
Limivady mange to recycle the ball and run it out their back line and look sure to score in the left corner but Ewan Douglas puts in a huge hit on his man and forces the turnover and the ball finds its way into the waiting hands of Orrin who sets off at high speed from inside his own 22 leaving a wake of missed tacklers in his path and he scores 5 meters in from the right corner flag. Try scored after 8 mins and the score after the missed conversion from Kaymin is [0 – 17].
Again from the kick off Limavady win back possession and are on the surge again this time a big hit comes in from Isaac and Letterkenny are awarded a penalty for hands in the ruck. Letterkenny kick for territory and get a lineout on the Limavady 10 meter line. A long throw to the back of the lineout misses all the jumpers and Kaymin is first to react and puts his body on the line sliding in to win the possession, but again an infringement by Letterkenny awards the penalty to the home team.
After 18 mins Letterkenny are forced to make a blood replacement with Isaac having to make way after putting in a big tackle but he catches a heel in the mouth for his troubles, on comes Eoin Harris who goes into the second row allowing Odhrán to move to flanker.
Limavady keep the pressure on and continue to move through the phases and get up again to the 22 but again some fine defensive by each and every man sees Letterkenny turnover the ball and Ben feeds Kaymin at out half and he puts boot to ball with a huge clearance kick which is followed up by the speedy David Henry who flattens his man, Limavady manage to retain possession and again spin it out wide only to be met by the tackler of the day Eoin Parkinson who picks up his man and drives him back 2 or 3 meters. Limavady continue to probe the lines with some great tight passes and they set their winger away but Ewan again matches the winger for pace and brings him down short of the line. Letterkenny win a penalty and opt for the quick tap which Orrin takes and catches the Limavady lads asleep at the wheel and makes 40 meters of ground before finally being brought down but he manages to offload to Ewan Douglas who is screaming for the ball outside him and he makes a dash for the line and scores 5 meters in from the right corner. 20 mins played and a tough conversion from out right is slotted by Kaymin Shortt making the score [0 – 24].
After the kick off Limavady are awarded another penalty on the halfway line and the big number 8 takes the quick tap and go and breaks through 3 or 4 Letterkenny tacklers but this time Ben Hopkins chops down the big lad with another fine tackle. Limavady continue to apply the pressure for the remaining few mins of the half and keep Letterkenny pinned in their 22 and mange to continue the drive making it to within 5 meters again, from the back of the maul one of their big players emerges with the ball and makes a break for the line but Letterkenny again manage to hold him up over the line. A maul ensues from the scrum and again Limavady go for the line but somehow Mathew emerges from the Letterkenny side with ball in hand to the relief of the spectators on the side line, he feeds Kaymin who goes on another of his runs taking play back up to the halfway line. The ref blows for HT with the score remaining at [0 – 24].
The coaches decide to bring on some fresh legs at half time and bring on Daithi Doherty, Jayden Friel , Finn Nicolas & Dylan Coyle to replace Conor Smyth, Dan Geoghegan , Leon Duffy & Ben Hopkins respectively, each lad having put in a fine display in the first half.
Limavady start the second half with a new lease of life having not been rewarded in the first half for some fine attacking play. They dominate the first 5 mins or so and continue to make those vital meters. Letterkenny hold strong however with some fine tackles, especially from Odhrán finn and Eoin Parkinson. Limavady continue through the phases with some fine passing and breaks from forwards and backs alike but Letterkenny continue to make those big tackles and keep them out. Letterkenny manage to steal the ball again when Mathew Duffy strips his man of the ball and Dylan Coyle feeds his out half Kaymin , who this time spots some space behind the charging Limavady backline and puts a kick over the top which is chased down by Orrin who catches the ball on the bounce he makes another couple of meters but is brought down short this time.
Letterkenny set the platform with a ruck and the ball is fed out to Orrin who makes a few crucial meters and he feeds Tiernan who in turn passes to Kaymin who sets off for the corner and beats several would be tacklers with some fine foot work and scores in the left corner. Try scored after 15 mins and the conversion is put left and wide by Orrin. [0 – 29].
Final sub of the day made with Orrin Burgess making way for Alex McDermott with 15 mins left to play.
Limavady unperturbed by the score line continue to play some fine rugby and battle their way up to the 5 meter where they earn several penalties. David Henry puts in some fine tackles to prevent certain tries but Limavady continue to turn the screw and finally break the line to the left of the posts and score a well earned first Try of the game for them. The conversion is missed and the score with 10 mins left is [5 – 29].
From the kick off Letterkenny are quick to put in the hits and Jayden tackles his man and manages to rip the ball from his hands, but Limavady with a new lease of life win back the possession and quickly get it out wide where their winger looks certain to score but a fast back tracking Finn Nicolas comes to the rescue on this occasion and takes out the winger.
With 2 mins left on the clock several penalties are awarded against Letterkenny inside their own 22 and Kaymin puts in a big hit on one of the Limavady back line but it is deemed high by the referee who shows yellow to Kaymin and he is binned for the remaining mins of the game. The big number 8 is fed the ball from the tapped penalty but Dylan Coyle steps up to make the tackle and brings him down, however the now surging forwards for Limavady pick up the ball and drive over for their second of the match in the dying seconds of the match 10 meters in from the right corner and the missed conversion is the final play of what was a good match against a tough Limavady side that played some fine running rugby and kept Letterkenny under pressure for much of the game.
Well done lads for another fine display and congrats on keeping that unbeaten record going.
Thanks to coaches and parents for their support today and throughout the season thus far.
