Letterkenny win the toss and choose to receive the ball from the kick off, Letterkenny start strong and with some great interchange play and breaks from Conor Smith and Jack Speer they find themselves only meters away, with some great mauling from the pack the ball is fed out the back line and Calum Orsi on the wing goes over in the corner for the first score of the day. The conversion from the right hand side line is good from Kaymin Shortt and the score after 2 mins of play is 7 – 0 to the home team.
Again from the kick off Letterkenny put the pressure on and from several great phases find themselves back in the 22 but they knock on and hand possession back to their rivals. This time from some great mauling by the pack Letterkenny find themselves with possession on the 10 meter line, Ben Hopkins this time spots a gap down the right and takes off on a solo run and scores a brilliant solo try in the corner. Another fantastic kick from the side line by Kaymin Shortt sees the score go to 14 – 0 after 5 mins of play.
Conor Smith takes a heavy knock to the knee and is forced to come off, both teams now have 14 players. This time Limivady make a sensational break and their full back was clean through and looked certain to score but Jynaid was determined not to give away the score and made his way back at pace to stop the try 5 meters from the line with a crunching tackle. Limivady however keep the pressure on and are reward for their efforts with their first try of the day to the right of the posts. Conversion is good and the score after 20 mins 14 – 7.
From the kick off Letterkenny again turn over the ball and Ben feeds Kaymin who switches the play and breaks to the left where he feeds Brian McGettigan at full pace who side steps his way to the line and crashes over to the left of the posts, 5 meters in from the side line. Conversion this time is missed and the score remains at 19 – 7 with 5 mins to play.
Kaymin leaves the field after taking a knock on his wrist and Letterkenny are forced to move David Henry into Outhalf. Ben Hopkins takes over the kicking duties and kicks off to Limivady to get the second half underway.
Limivady start the stronger in the second half and after only a couple of mins score to the left of the posts, score 19 – 14 after a good conversion.
Letterkenny find themselves 5 meters from the Limivady line and are awarded a penalty, quick tap by Ben who feeds Jack Speer on the charge and he crashes over in the corner after 8 mins of play. Tough Conversion from the side line is missed by David and the score remains at 24 – 14.
Letterkenny keep the pressure on and with some great hands the ball is fed out to Calum Orsi on the wing who is stopped meters from the line. This time Limivady come out of their 22 and with some great hands get the ball out wide and their winger takes off for the line and scores under the posts. Conversion is good so with 10 mins to play the score is 24 – 21.
Letterkenny make their way into striking distance again with some fine play by both forwards and backs and are awarded another penalty 10 meters out. Quick tap by Ben who this time feeds Conor Smith on the charge and he uses his strengthen to drive over in the corner. Conversion is missed and the score is 29 – 21 with 5 mins left on the clock.
Limivady heap on the pressure and make their way towards the 22 but Ben has other ideas and rips the ball from the Limivady attackers hands and kicks the ball clear.
Again Limivady are on the charge but Brian McGettigan adds to his tally of huge tackles on the day and stops a certain try. Letterkenny again turnover the ball and from the back of the maul David Henry spots a gap and kicks the ball over the heads of the Limivady defence, David chases his own kick which it looked like the Limivady player would get their first but the defender fumbles the ball over the line and David with some quick thinking dives on the ball to score the try. The conversion from out wide is attempted by Ben Hopkins but the ball falls short of the bar and the score remains at 34 – 21.
Thanks to the coaches and parents for their support on the day another fine win for Letterkenny.
