U14s away to Coleraine

U14 win away to Coleraine 15::17
Letterkenny travelled to Coleraine for this weekend’s fixture. Conditions were perfect for
rugby and for much of this game both sides were well matched with much of this contest
hard fought around the middle of the field.
Letterkenny went ahead on ten minutes. Coleraine were penalised just outside their own
22. A tap 'n go was passed into the hands of the on-rushing David Ilie and he burst through
a number of Coleraine tackles to crash over in the corner. [0-5]
Just two minutes later Letterkenny again breached the Coleraine line. This time Cillian Boyle
found a gap in the Coleraine defence and despite some late tackles he had the momentum
to touch down for the second try. A more central conversion was kicked over by Cian
Credit to Coleraine who stuck to their task throughout. They struck back on 21 minutes with
a series of passes creating an overlap out-wide for their winger to run in a try from near on
the half-way line. Conversion missed [5-12]
Five minutes after the restart Letterkenny were penalised at a ruck inside the Coleraine
half. A good kick to touch had the Letterkenny lads deep in their own half and after a few
phases of play Coleraine were in for their second try. Conversion missed [10-12]
On 44 minutes Letterkenny got their third try of the afternoon with a familiar tactic
employed – a tap & go to a fired up David Ilie, and there was no stopping the Letterkenny
man as he resisted a number of efforts to haul him down before the line.
With a difficult out-wide conversion missed [10-17], Coleraine knew that a converted try
would be enough for a share of the spoils and they scrambled well in midfield in the final
minute to create an opening for a kick chase into the Letterkenny goal area. The
Letterkenny lads won the race to the ball but the referee adjudged that a
Coleraine hand had got on the ball first and awarded a try. With almost the last kick of the
game the conversion was missed and a few hefty Letterkenny tackles after the restart
forced a knock on by Coleraine and the end of this game.
Special mention goes out to Ronan Lapsley who started No 8 today and did exactly what was asked of him.
Thanks to Coleraine RFC who were as usual, excellent hosts. Their U14s team were a credit to the club.
Final score Coleraine 15 – Letterkenny 17. Next Game is home against Inishowen.
