Donegal Town ‘Barbarians’ meet Letterkenny U14
By Peter Orsi
U14 travel through the Gap to take on the Donegal Town Barbarians
With the points in the bag for Letterkenny before this game started a Donegal select featuring some
of Letterkenny’s finest took on the rest of the Letterkenny squad in what turned out to be a lively
development run out for all players.
After a flurry of end-to-end action, Letterkenny got on the score sheet after 5 minutes with Ultan
McGuinness weaving a path to score in the corner [0-5]. Straight from the kick-off the ball was
caught and passed off to Finn Duffy who nudged off a few soft tackles to find space on the wing and
ran in to score from his own half. Try converted by Cian O’Hagan [0-12] back from Injury.
Letterkenny went further ahead on 10 minutes. Great pressure by the forwards and then quick
hands put Charlie Robinson in space on the wing. A smart pass inside allowed Ultan in for an easy
This game looked over but amazingly Donegal Town roared into the lead before half-time. First
Donegal were awarded a scrum deep in the Letterkenny half and David Ilie playing for Donegal
peeled off the back of a solid Donegal scrum. A fearless tackle by Will Harris almost had him pulled down
but his momentum got him cross the line [5-17]
Two minutes later and Donegal put their winger Shane into space on the outside and with
Letterkenny numbers short he managed to run from inside his own half to score round the back of
the posts [12-17]
Letterkenny fought back and whilst pressing for a score themselves lost the ball. Donegal kicked
clear and the number 12 won the chase almost the length of the field to the delight of the home
Letterkenny regrouped at half-time with some reminders from the coaches to get back to passing the ball
through phases and stretching the play. With some on field guidance from the Letterkenny Captain Ryan Orsi, the
lads regained control and enjoyed a period of good possession before releasing Ultan for his third try of the day.
10 minutes into the second half saw the best try of the game. Letterkenny resisted a series of
Donegal attacks on their 5m line before a long clearance kick found open space behind the Donegal
full back. Letterkenny managed to retrieve the ball deep in Donegal territory and a series of
excellent passes set Ultan up for a try under the posts. A great team effort having switched defence
into a swift attack! [19-31]
Cian Arenhold then followed up with another contender for try of the match. Having found space
out wide he still had a lot of work to do but danced his way around two defenders to find a hole and
ran in for a terrific score in the corner. Cian landed a great conversion. [19-38]
A now dominant Letterkenny scored another try with Finn Duffy just staying out of the clutches of a
David Ilie pursuit in front of the clubhouse [19-45]. However credit to the Donegal players who with
the last play of the game took a quick tap and go from a penalty on the Letterkenny 22 and passed
out to find their prop who ran in unopposed under the posts [26-45].
Credit to all players and a great run out for everyone.
