City of Armagh 33–36 Letterkenny
Letterkenny U18s claimed their third consecutive league victory in dramatic fashion away to City of Armagh, with Matthew Farrell converting a penalty on the final play to secure a hard-earned 36–33 win.
The encounter carried added significance for the visitors following last year’s U18 Cup semi-final defeat and U16 Plate final loss to the same opposition. What followed was a thrilling contest full of attacking quality, determined defending and late drama.
Letterkenny made a flying start, racing into an early 14–0 lead. Armagh responded strongly, however, scoring three unanswered tries to move ahead. Two further Letterkenny tries and another from the hosts left the sides level at half-time after an excellent opening 35 minutes of rugby.
The second half brought sustained pressure on the Letterkenny defence. Armagh’s powerful attacking play pinned the visitors deep inside their own 22, but the lads responded with a remarkable defensive effort. A succession of try-saving tackles and crucial turnovers repeatedly denied the hosts.
Armagh eventually found a way through to regain the lead, leaving Letterkenny chasing the game. After coming close on several occasions, the visitors crossed with around five minutes remaining to draw level and set up a grandstand finish.
The hosts threw everything at the Letterkenny line in the closing stages, but the defence held firm once again before regaining possession. Excellent team play, combined with a series of penalties, allowed Letterkenny to advance upfield.
With the final play of the game, Armagh were penalised for offside on their own 22. Matthew Farrell stepped up and made no mistake, slotting the decisive penalty to secure a memorable three-point victory.
The result reflects the squad’s resilience, composure and willingness to work for one another. Three consecutive wins leave Letterkenny well placed near the top of the table and provide a strong platform for the remainder of the league campaign.
