There were near perfect conditions on Saturday for Letterkenny to host close neighbours Derry YMCA at Dave Gallagher Park. Although not at full strength it was still an impressive Kenny team with the likes of Dunleavy and Rae Clarke in the pack and Gibson and McFadden in the backs. The game started off well with Kenny dominating from the start. Within a few minutes the pressure paid off and 2nd row Dunleavy broke through for a try beneath the posts. Kenny continued to dominate especially in the scrums where props Digimas and Clarke didn’t give an inch to their Derry opposite numbers. It was the backs though that got the next scores with 3 tries from McNichol, Friel and Nolan. These were followed by 2 tried within 4 minutes from no 8 Ciaran Clarke who had a fantastic game. Just before the half centre McFadden got through for another after breaking 3 attempted tackles.
The 2nd half was a bit slower as Derry rallied in defence showing determination on a difficult day for them. It wasn’t enough to hold off the Kenny men as Captain Drew Gibson ran in 2 more tries to finish the game off. Bryan McGinley had a good day and showed how well he is improving at place kicks by slotting over 6 of his 9 conversions.
