In the final game of the Gordon West Cup group stages it was a the players from the 2nd XV who were given a chance to show that they could step up a level to Qualifying level rugby by travelling to face Derry YMCA. It was to be a close encounter with each side really putting in everything in both attack and defence. Derry got an early try in the first half but this didn’t stop Kenny who were rewarded for their efforts with a fantastic break away try from scrum half McNichol a few minutes later. Derry did well in defence after this but were constantly tested by no8 Gallagher who had a superb game. They held tight though until late in the 2nd half when Gallagher ran the ball from the back of the scrum and offloaded to McNichol who sidestepped 2 defenders and ran between the posts for another try. A few minutes later Kenny secured a penalty just outside of the Derry 22 which out half Robinson slotted over to give Kenny a comfortable lead. Derry responded well and got another try with their big number 8 powering through the Kenny defenders. But it was too late and the final whistle blew with 1 point in the difference. Final score Derry YMCA 14 – Letterkenny 15.
