Letterkenny Won No Oscars at Holywood

Letterkenny travelled on Saturday with a much changed team to face a Holywood side who have built up some momentum over the last few weeks. Unfortunately the men from Donegal couldn’t put a stop the run of good results recently achieved by the Co. Down side.
Holywood started brightly and were up by a penalty and an unconverted try within 10 minutes of the kick off. Letterkenny had to live off scraps of possession as the normally very reliable set piece failed them badly. The first few scrums were lost against the head and line out throws picked off with ease by the home side. Just as Letterkenny were getting to grips with the game they lost centre John Anthony McFadden to a knee injury after a typical barnstorming run. With a man down, no source of primary possession and facing a rampant Holywood, Letterkenny shipped several more tries before the half time break with only a penalty from Ryan Mortimer in reply.
Early in the second half the play from Letterkenny improved with Keelan Kriel making an impressive debut and Chris Lamberton tackling well. Gary Canning. Gareth McGill and Ben Mortimer put their usual shift of hard graft in to good effect. Within 5 mins of the break Letterkenny were down to 13 men with the loss of prop Sean Morris. The only silver lining to playing with two players short was that with an uncontested scrum now Letterkenny had a platform to work off. Ryan Mortimer made a lovely break out of defence supported well by the impressive Caoimhin Mac Lochlainn and the back three of Seanie Henry, Chris Peterson and Chris McCrudden all had good showings with ball in hand. For 20 minutes the 13 Donegal men took the game to Holywood and were probably unlucky not to get the breakthrough for the try they deserved. Conall Sheridan was directing operations from scrum half and was making great ground in combination with Michael Foy from the base of the Letterkenny scrum.
Inevitably though the Letterkenny purple patch came to an end as the burden of playing with a two man disadvantage came to bear towards the end of the match. Holywood ran in several tries to run out comfortable winners but to Letterkenny’s credit every try they got they had to work hard for. Newry await the young Letterkenny side next Saturday in a re-arranged league fixture.

Training continues on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7-8.30pm. All are welcome.
