Rugby Values the Order of the Day

Letterkenny 51-0 Ophir

Saturday saw the arrival of Ophir to Letterkenny to round off a mixed month of fixtures for the home team. Ophir having had a tough season to date, were unable to field enough players for a full team and as a result, conceded the points before kick off. However, such are the values in Rugby, that Letterkenny were able to call upon a few extra players on Saturday morning to tog out for the away side and on a cool but crisp November day it meant that both teams could still enjoy the beautiful game. Although the game was uncontested, it was great to observe the endeavours of the away side throughout the 80 minutes. Much to the delight of the home fans, Letterkenny dominated the play and the scoreboard however, the away team did have their moments. The crowd were saddened to see the departure of Ophir's two brightest stars on Saturday, when their tighthead prop and outhalf both left the field with injuries. Their quality was evident throughout the game and we would hope that their injuries don't keep them out for too long. The game was played in great spirits by both sides and what was particularly refreshing to see was how well the Letterkenny men who had gone ophir to the other side (sorry), were able to gel so well with the opposition. In fact, it would be a travesty not to mention the fantastic performance from Kevin "Guns" McLaughlin as he tore in to his own team with big hits, barrelling runs and vital but dubious attempted interceptions. On the Letterkenny side, Darragh McConnell lined out at number 10 showing his versatility while Bryan McGinley displayed his class from fullback, counter attacking superbly and kicking in to the corners to keep Letterkenny in the right area's of the field. That said, the stand out player of the day had to be Letterkenny's number 7, James Sweeney. The young flanker put in his best shift to date and he looks to be hitting some decent form approaching the midpoint of the season.

Letterkenny's next HOME game is on the 8th of December when they welcome Strabane to the Glebe. Up next however is a trip across the border to face PSNI on Saturday (Dec 1st).
