Letterkenny U16s had their last warm up preseason match v Foyle College in Derry on a beautiful Friday evening in Derry.
Foyle got to a very positive start with some direct play and scored two quick tries, partly aided by some sloppy play by Letterkenny. Foyle were more competitive at the tackle/breakdown area and took their chances very well to go into a 14 point lead.
The Letterkenny lads regrouped to counter with some promising play to challenge the Foyle line but still struggled to convert pressure and territory into points. Eventually Rory O'Brien made a superb individual run to score and converted himself to get Letterkenny off the mark. Foyle responded with another unconverted try to go 19 -7 into the lead.
The Letterkenny lads scored next resulting from positive and multiphase play, finished off by speedy Jack Robinson in the left corner 19 - 12.
The final result was a fair reflection. The Letterkenny lads showed many positives but need to work on the basics of handling, tackling and keep working on their structure and work around the break down. Too many players were hanging off and ball watching while the Foyle lads were sharper around the collision and contact area. If Letterkenny can work on this area, they can build on this performance for the league matches to come. Jarrod Arenhold was especially combative and dangerous in the centre and Davy Geoghegan put in some powerful runs and hits in defence. Conor Kenna was very fluid in distributing the ball from 9 and was excellent in defence. The Letterkenny scrum was dominant with Aaron Gibson and Shaun Bundschu putting in promising performances.
All in all a positive match with both teams showing ambition and some excellent defence. The attack for both teams will improve with more matches. Next week Letterkenny Provincial play Ballymoney away and Letterkenny Regional play Strabane Academy. All players urged to keep training and get ready for the league matches to come at both levels. Well done to all players and many thanks to Foyle College for hosting at their wonderful facilities.
