Letterkenny get the match underway in Dave Gallagher park at 11:30 sharp with Referee Martin Mortimore blowing the whistle, Kaymin puts boot to ball into a very stiff wind blowing from right to left and across the field and into his face. Letterkenny are quick to chase but Derry secure possession and are soon coming strong at Letterkenny from every angle but for the first 6 or 7 mins of the game it is a tight fought affair with possession changing hands several times and much of the game being played close to the half way line.
Letterkenny are first to concede a penalty inside their own half and Derry put the ball deep into the left corner with a huge boot from outhalf Cody who is set to dominate much of the game today with a fine performance from the boot and also in his running skills on the day.
Derry now have the platform set with a lineout 5 meters out, they win the ball at the line out at number 2 with their second row soaring above Eoin Harris who has his work cut out for him today in this position as Derry dominate many of the lineouts. Derry form the maul and force their way across the line 5 meters in from the left corner flag for their first try of the day. Cody misses the difficult kick from out wide with the wind playing its part. Score after 7 mins 0 – 5 to the visitors.
Letterkenny kick off again and manage to win back the ball, this time Dan Geoghegan drops the shoulder and makes a surge forward making several meters and the ball is protected well by his fellow forwards, the ball is fed out through Ben to Kaymin who puts boot to ball and the chase is on and Letterkenny put the pressure on forcing the knock on. Again Letterkenny apply the pressure but Derry are upto the task on the day and soon win back possession and are on the charge again, but a great tackle from Mathew Duffy thwarts the attack on this occasion. Derry are unperturbed and maintain the pressure edging ever closer to the line but some fine tackles again this time from Odhran Finn and Eoin Parkinson halt what looked like certain scores. But with Derry maintaining the pressure they finally break down the heroic tackling and score their second try again out left in the same spot. The conversion is again missed but the score is now 0 -10 after 20 mins of play.
Derry take the ball from the kick off and with some great hands and running from their backs catch Letterkenny on the hop and are over in the right corner this time. Conversion is slotted this time by Cody and the score after 23 mins is 0- 17.
Derry now have the wind in their sails and the Letterkenny heads have dropped and they run in yet another try with another few mins played on the clock. With the conversion again slotted by outhalf Cody the score is 0 -24 with only 6 mins or so remaining in the half.
Derry continue to play some fine rugby running the ball out the back line and the winger has his ears pinned back and is heading for the corner but Kaymin is having none of it and from out of nowhere he comes across the field to flatten the winger into touch to prevent the score. Derry however are firing on all cylinders now and win the lineout and again with quick hands feed the back line who get it out to Cody who breaks several would be tacklers before crossing the line for Derry’s fifth try. Cody slots the conversion and the score 0 – 31 with mins left in the first half.
Eoin Harris is first to chase down the ball from the kick off and he nails his man with a fine tackle, the ball however is fed out and Derry are on the attack again, Kaymin again puts in another fine tackle to add to his tally on the day and the ball is knocked on. Letterkenny again win their scrum which they did very well on each occasion on the day even though the strong Derry pack seemed to have the weight advantage. The ball again is fed out through Ben to Kaymin and he goes on one of his runs and makes about 10 meters before being brought down, and the ball spills into touch for a Derry lineout. Derry again come hard and break the line and the winger is headed for a certain try in the corner and yes you guessed it Kaymin is first there to put in another superb tackle to save the try. Derry however now 5 meters out keep the pressure on and crash over in the last min for another try. Conversion is good and the score at HT is 0 – 38.
Derry kick the ball into touch from the restart and Letterkenny have the put in to the scrum on the halfway line. The scrum is won and the ball is fed to Kaymin who puts in a lovely grubber kick and finds touch halfway between the 22 and the goal line on the right hand side of the field. Letterkenny are awarded a penalty from the lineout which they quickly tap and go, they are stopped just short of under the posts but they do well to maintain possession, Ben peels to the right and sells the dummy and crashes over to the right of the posts for a well-deserved try for Letterkenny, Kaymin adds the 2 points and the score after 1 min of the second half is 7 – 38.
Derry however from the kick off apply the pressure yet again and battle their way up to the 10 meter line, the ball is spilled and Eoin Parkinson is first to react and dives on the ball to win back possession. Letterkenny are awarded a penalty inside their own 22 and Ben taps quickly but the Derry players are not back 10 so a further 10 meters are awarded by the referee. Letterkenny get themselves out of trouble on this occasion and with another fine carry from Dan are on the front foot again. Derry turn over yet again and opt to get the ball out wide however Ben is up fast and intercepts the pass but again Derry win back possession in the maul and are coming hard again at Letterkenny, Kaymin again steps up and takes out the player breaking through and he quickly jumps to his feet to make yet another tackle to halt the attack.
Derry get a penalty outside the 22 which is quickly tapped but Jack Speer does well to stop the change and hold up the player to allow his forwards to get behind him. But Derry get the ball out again and this time Odhran Finn puts in a crunching tackle to halt the attack. All the Letterkenny players are doing well in defense to hold out a very strong attacking Derry side and they manage to win another penalty and clear their lines once more.
Derry break the line once more after stealing another line out and the second row is brought crashing down with yet another huge tackle from Jack Speer. Derry keep up the pressure and find themselves over again this time in the right corner. Conversion is missed and the score with 22mins left in the second half is 7 – 43.
Cody catches the restart and puts in a huge boot which is plucked from the air by Colm Gallagher who opts to kick and the ball goes into touch for a lineout to Derry on the halfway line.
Derry again make it up to the 22 but Letterkenny turn the ball over with another fine steal by Eoin Parkinson and the ball is fed to Kaymin inside the 22 and he goes on another run with some lovely foot work he makes it through numerous would be tacklers and is finally brought down on the 10 meter line. Derry have another scrum and again go to get the ball out wide and again Ben is aware of the danger and reads it well intercepting his second of the day and he feeds Jason Patton who makes another 10 meters before being brought down, he sets up the ruck and Conor Smyth takes the ball at pace from the back of the ruck and makes some good ground and Letterkenny again do well to maintain possession and setup another attack, this time Kaymin switches direction and goes for the blind side and puts a great dink over the top but the ball has a little too much on it and rolls into touch 5 meters out, but a fine period of play from Letterkenny none the less.
Derry again win the lineout and clear the pressure but Letterkenny come at them again with some fine charges from Luke McKinney and Dan making good ground, the ball is again turned over and with quick hands the Derry back line find some space and are not to be stopped crossing in the right corner.
Conversion is good and the score 7 – 50 with only a few mins left to play.
Derry again win back possession and Cody goes on another of his runs and scores the final try of the day but the conversion is missed leaving the score on the day 7 -55.
