After yesterday's wet, slushy, and cold conditions, we had no idea, what we might face in Derry, this morning.
The sun came out, and aside from some mud, overall, the conditions weren't too bad.
From the referees whistle, Letterkenny hit their stride, and totally dominated the first 20 minutes. Derry struggled to touch the ball, and when they did, it just didn't happen for them. A high work rate, from the forwards, especially Oisin Farrell, and Eoin Parkinson ( ripping the ball, and driving ) saw Letterkenny moving up the field. Six phases, with the forwards, then out through the backline, to left winger Eoin Harris, whom ran in, Letterkenny's first try, at the left side of the tryline.
From the restart, it was a case of more-of-the-same. Phase after phase, of driving up the field, and a second try came, from number eight, Oisin Farrell.
Outside Centre, Rory O'Connell touched down, when the ball was next feed out the backline. Rory picked a course, "totally straight", through Derry's defence.
Letterkenny took their foot, off the pedal, and Derry punished Letterkenny for doing so. Derry scored and took the conversion.
Half time - Letterkenny 15, Derry 7
The second half, was a more even handed affair.
After 10 minutes, the flyhalf, Kaymin Shortt, ran from the halfway line, cutting a path through the Derry defence, and scored under the posts. Kaymin converted his own try.
Derry returned the favour, in the final minute of the match, with a messy ( spilt ) try.
Some outstanding tackling, especially from Jack Speer, stopped Derry from gaining any kind of a foothold, in the game.
Letterkenny lock, Jynaid Rayes, was sent off, for putting hands in the ruck, after getting a warning from the referee. ( The ref had ordered off a Derry player, earlier in the half, for a similar offence. )
The final whistle blew.
