Cometh the hour, cometh the team.
On a fine winter morning, down on "Mooresfield", Letterkenny Under 14s, ( currently sitting at the top of the Ulster Carpets North League ) faced their biggest rivals, ( currently sitting in second position ), Ballymena. Letterkenny had a clean sweep, of six wins from six matches, Ballymena had five wins and one draw. This was our "High Noon".
Right from kick off, Letterkenny fought to get the ball, keep the ball, and to drive forward, all the time. Phase after phase, of driving up the field. Ballymena defended well, and it was slow progress, but eventually, with the forwards, driving on and on, the team moved towards the tryline, culminating in Letterkenny's first try, to number eight, Oisin Farrell.
After the restart, Letterkenny continued with their dominant play, surging forward, up the field. From an infringement, Ballymena were awarded a penalty. They took a quick tap. Peter Sparks was able to read the play. The cheeky number 12, ran forward and managed to get an interception, and sprinted for a try, under the posts. Rory O'Connell converted the try.
Another restart and there seemed to be no-way of stopping Letterkenny. Ballymena attempted a clearance kick. It was charged down, by Conor Mangan. Conor was able to get to the ball first, scoop it up, and ran to the try line. Rory converted the try.
From a ruck, the Ballymena back line, were in the wrong place, and there was an overlap, for Letterkenny. The ball spun out, through Rory, Peter, and finally to Tiernan McFadden, ( Outside Centre ) who scored in the corner.
Half Time : Letterkenny 24 Ballymena 0
The second half, continued in the same manner, as the first. From midfield play, the ball was passed out the Letterkenny back line, to right winger, Ewan Douglas, whom ran around his opposite number, to score under the posts. Kaymin Shortt kicked the converson.
Oisin Farrell got his second try of the day, coming from a scrum, near the Letterkenny try-line. Kaymin kicked the converson.
Disappointingly, a try was disallowed, after Kaymin Shortt ran over the dead-ball line, while trying to get the ball, under the posts.
Ballymena crossed the whitewash, with a late-in-the-day consolation try.
The last say, was had, when Gaetano Cinquenani, got the ball and ran across and up the field, drawing in the defender, before off loading, to Rory O'Connell, whom scored the try.
