Getting to the business end of the season, is hard work for any team, but to get there with a clean sheet of twelve wins from twelve matches, is fantastic. Letterkenny were about to turn that twelve into thirteen.
Another beautiful frosty day, with a bright sun, welcomed the Letterkenny and City of Derry teams, to Mooresfield, Letterkenny. Derry had a quarter-final place ( in the Ulster U14s League ) to play for, while Letterkenny had already qualified, and were playing for pride.
Derry kicked off, to start the game.
Letterkenny straight away, displayed a different attitude, to the lack-luster performance, they had shown the previous week, against Limavady. They took the game to the "Walls of Derry" and shut Derry down. It was like watching a different team. This was commanded by the Coaches, displayed by the Captain, and enacted down through the players.
Letterkenny were attacking. The ball went out the backline to Tiernan McFadden ( left winger ), whom always is able to pass-the-gain-line, and constantly makes ground. The ball was rucked over, and fed to Issac Mcllwaine ( openside flanker ), whom used his leg strength, to cross the line, for Letterkenny's first try. Kaymin Shortt ( flyhalf ) converted the try.
After the re-start, Letterkenny dominated possession again, driving the ball, up the field. From the 22", the forwards kept picking and driving, for three phases, then moved the ball out the backline. When the ball got to Peter Sparks ( first centre ), he had the rest of the backline outside him, but they were running out of space. Peter "dummied", and stepped inside, seeing the gap, and touched down for Letterkenny's second try, of the match.
Half Time: Letterkenny 12 - City of Derry 0
Letterkenny kicked off, to restart the second half.
As Letterkenny grew in confidence, the coaches started to make some substitutions. Issac and Peter ( the try scorers, from the first half ) had already left the field, due to collisions. Letterkenny continued to dominate the game. Jack Speer ( number eight ), had crossed the line, but the try was disallowed due to an infringement. Eoin Harris ( right wing ) was forced into touch, when he was almost on the tryline. A third try finally came, when the forwards drove over the line, and Lorcan Sweeney managed to press the ball down.
Kaymin converted the try.
In the dying minutes of the game, Derry managed to salvage something, and crossed the tryline.
