What a season ! What a team !
Undefeated Letterkenny Under 14s, played their final league match, against Ballymena.
The weather was overcast, but the dull darkness of the day, didn't deter or distract our champions.
Ballymena kicked off, to open the match.
Ballymena controlled the flow of the game, maintaining a lot of ball possession. Letterkenny struggled to "play their type of game." Letterkenny held on, as Ballymena kept the game, down their scoring end. The level of tackling and defending was tremendous. Ballymena were throwing everything at us, but Letterkenny kept the line, and stopped everything that came our way. A number of refereeing decisions, went against Letterkenny, which caused further frustration.
Letterkenny knocked-forward the ball. The referee played advantage. Ballymena's flyhalf got his toe to the ball, and kicked it behind Letterkenny's defence, scooped up the ball, and fell under the posts. This try was converted.
Half Time: Letterkenny 0 Ballymena 7
Letterkenny kicked off, to re-start the second half.
Letterkenny started to "relax into the game", and began playing the kind of game, they wanted to play.
Kaymin Shortt, ( whom had come on, in the second half, as flyhalf ), was able to cut through Ballymena's defence, side-stepping & goose-stepping, to score Letterkenny's first try. This lifted the whole team, which allowed Letterkenny to believe in themselves, again.
Kaymin was able to repeated that run, a second time, giving Letterkenny their second try, and finally put Letterkenny into the lead, late in the match.
With two minutes, and only three points separating the teams, it was anyone's game.
The momentum of the game was with Letterkenny and their confidence was back. The ball was spun out the back line, through Kaymin Shortt, David Sparks, Bryan McGettigan, to Eoin Harris. Eoin was running, with pace, down the wing and then stepping inside, to run a beautiful try under the posts. Kaymin converted the try.
